Abbott, Harmer strike on day 2

Kyle Abbott and Simon Harmer completed ruthless spells for Hampshire and Essex as South Africans starred on day 2 of the County Championship.

Sussex vs Hampshire – Hampshire lead by 238

Abbott was the destroyer-in-chief, adding five more wickets to his overnight tally to finish with 6-49 as Sussex were bowled out for 159.

Delano Potgieter then made a defiant 55 off 129 balls in Hampshire’s second innings before being dismissed by Jack Carson, with Abbott unbeaten on 16 at the close.

Essex vs Nottinghamshire – Essex trail by 260

Harmer was equally destructive, taking 5-45 to help bowl out Nottinghamshire, while Dean Elgar remained unbeaten on 10 as the hosts found themselves well behind in the contest.

Northamptonshire vs Durham – Durham trail by 148

Ricardo Vasconcelos added just one run to his overnight 186 before being dismissed for 187 by Matthew Potts, who finished with 3-84 as Northamptonshire were bowled out for 450.

David Bedingham made just eight as Durham replied, though Ben Stokes’ combative 95 kept the visitors in touch.

Glamorgan vs Surrey – Surrey trail by 171

Colin Ingram battled back from a finger injury sustained the previous day to add to his overnight 23, finishing with 80 as Glamorgan reached 358.

Tom Norton’s 5-50 then bowled out Surrey for just 105, forcing the follow-on, before the visitors closed on 82-2.

Warwickshire vs Somerset – Somerset trail by 99

Jordan Hermann ended the day unbeaten on 16 as Somerset closed on 23-1 in their second innings.

Gloucestershire vs Worcestershire – Worcestershire trail by 79

Beyers Swanepoel completed a five-wicket haul, finishing with 5-65 as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 289. Gareth Roderick chopped on for seven off Daaryoush Ahmed as Worcestershire fought to stay in the contest.
