Former Proteas captain Dean Elgar made just 12 as Essex were bowled out for 184, with Liam Patterson-White running through the order to finish with 6-43.
Simon Harmer was among those removed by the left-arm spinner and finished his bowling spell wicketless on 0-35 from 12 overs as Nottinghamshire closed on 111-2, trailing by 73.
Sussex vs Hampshire – Hampshire 191, Sussex 121-3
Hampshire’s South African pair set about repairing the damage after being bowled out for 191. Kyle Abbott took 1-32 and Delano Potgieter ended with 2-19 from his ten overs as Sussex closed on 121-3, trailing by 70.
Somerset vs Warwickshire – Somerset 208, Warwickshire 92-2
Jordan Hermann could not continue his fine recent form, falling for 17 to Nathan Gilchrist, while Migael Pretorius added 15 before being caught and bowled by Manav Suthar as Somerset were bowled out for 208.
Pretorius then went for 24 in six overs as Warwickshire reached 92-2 at the close.
Derbyshire vs Lancashire – Lancashire 161, Derbyshire 36-0
Matthew Montgomery’s 86 made it a near-perfect day for Derbyshire after Lancashire were bowled out for 161, with captain Wayne Madsen unbeaten on 25 as the hosts built a 36-run lead.
Worcestershire vs Gloucestershire – Gloucestershire 258-7
Graeme van Buuren contributed 23 as Gloucestershire reached 258-7, with Beyers Swanepoel the standout performer for the home attack, taking 3-50 from his 19 overs.
Northamptonshire vs Durham – Northamptonshire 388-6
Ricardo Vasconcelos dominated proceedings, closing unbeaten on 181 and striking 24 boundaries, including 22 fours and two sixes, as he closed in on a maiden double century. Northamptonshire finished the day on 388-6 against Durham, who chose to field.
