Marizanne Kapp and Tazmin Brits produced a batting masterclass as the Proteas Women claimed an eight-wicket win in the first ODI against Pakistan in Lahore on Tuesday.
Chasing 256, the pair shared an unbroken 216-run stand – South Africa’s highest for the third wicket in women’s ODIs – to take their side home with 10 balls to spare.
Kapp struck a career-best 121* off 128 balls (13 fours, two sixes) while Brits compiled a composed 101* off 121 (nine fours) as both brought up memorable centuries.
Earlier, Pakistan posted 255-4 after winning the toss and batting.
They suffered an early blow when Shawaal Zulfiqar (nought) edged behind off Ayabonga Khaka (2-36), but Sidra Amin (121* off 150 balls; 12 fours) and Muneeba Ali (76 off 94; 11 fours) rebuilt the innings with a 147-run second-wicket stand.
Khaka struck again to trap Ali lbw, and although Amin found support from Aliya Riaz (33) in a 68-run partnership, the Proteas fought back.
Riaz was run out by Nondumiso Shangase and Sinalo Jafta, before Tumi Sekhukhune (1-37) removed Fatima Sana (three).
Despite wickets falling around her, Amin reached her fifth ODI century to anchor Pakistan’s innings.
South Africa made a shaky start when captain Laura Wolvaardt (four) was bowled by Sadia Iqbal (1-41) in the second over.
Suné Luus (30) added 43 for the second wicket with Brits before falling lbw to Rameen Shamim (1-29).
From there, Kapp and Brits took control, rotating the strike smartly and punishing loose deliveries to complete a clinical chase and secure a 1-0 series lead.
The second ODI will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium on Friday from 12:30pm (SA time).
