• Four South Africans in Ngidi’s best XI

Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has named only four fellow South Africans in a hypothetical best XI played with and against.

The quartet of Proteas – past and present – are wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock, former captain Faf du Plessis, the retired AB de Villiers and fast bowler Kagiso Rabada.

The rest of the XI comprises Indian quartet Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, alongside England all-rounder Ben Stokes, Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood and Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan.

The start of Ngidi’s international career overlapped with the end of De Villiers’. They have since been team-mates at the Tshwane Spartans in the Mzansi Super League.

Ngidi played alongside Dhoni at the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. Ngidi was retained by the Super Kings for this year’s IPL, alongside Du Plessis and fellow Proteas star Imran Tahir.

The 2020 IPL, though, has been suspended indefinitely as a preventative measure against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

Chennai have won three IPL titles. Only the Mumbai Indians have won more – four.
