Vasconcelos fires Northants to Blast title

Johannesburg-born Ricardo Vasconcelos produced a match-winning innings as Northamptonshire beat Hampshire by 14 runs in the Vitality Blast final at Edgbaston.

Vasconcelos struck 88 off 59 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes, to help Northants post 169 after they were bowled out with one delivery remaining.

The opener held the innings together after Chris Lynn fell for four, sharing a 60-run partnership with Nathan McSweeney, who contributed a brisk 30 off 16 balls.

Vasconcelos then added 69 with Lewis McManus before his innings was ended by Sonny Baker in the 17th over. Baker finished with remarkable figures of 5-21, but Northants had already reached a competitive total.

Hampshire’s chase suffered an immediate setback when Toby Albert was dismissed from the first delivery.

Joe Weatherley kept their hopes alive with 75 off 53 balls, but Proteas batter Tristan Stubbs managed just two before Calvin Harrison bowled him in the 11th over.

Liam Dawson struck 35 off 18 balls to revive Hampshire’s challenge, but his run-out left them needing 32 from the final 20 deliveries.

James Sales claimed 3-25 before Ben Sanderson wrapped up the innings for 155 in 19.2 overs.

Vasconcelos was named Player of the Match after his decisive contribution helped Northamptonshire lift the Blast trophy.
