Vasconcelos then added 69 with Lewis McManus before his innings was ended by Sonny Baker in the 17th over. Baker finished with remarkable figures of 5-21, but Northants had already reached a competitive total.
Hampshire’s chase suffered an immediate setback when Toby Albert was dismissed from the first delivery.
Joe Weatherley kept their hopes alive with 75 off 53 balls, but Proteas batter Tristan Stubbs managed just two before Calvin Harrison bowled him in the 11th over.
