Harmer, Abbott lead County Championship’s wicket list

Few overseas signings have made the impact that Simon Harmer and Kyle Abbott have in county cricket. Their decade numbers confirm they belong in a category of their own.

Simon Harmer and Kyle Abbott have cemented their status as two of the greatest overseas signings in County Championship history, occupying the top two spots on the most wickets list from 2020 to 2026.

Harmer leads the decade with 305 wickets at an average of 25.43, claiming 18 five-wicket hauls along the way. The Essex off-spinner has been one of the most consistent performers in county cricket for the better part of a decade, and his numbers over this period confirm what many already knew – he is the standout overseas signing of his generation in English conditions.

Abbott sits second with 274 wickets at an average of 20.68 and 17 five-wicket hauls. The Hampshire seamer’s average is the best of any bowler in the top ten, underlining the consistency and control that has made him such a valued presence at the Ageas Bowl across multiple seasons.

The two South Africans sit clear of England’s James Porter in third with 255 wickets, while Mohammad Abbas is the only other overseas bowler in the top ten with 219 wickets at an average of 25.07.
