In an exclusive interview with SportsBoom, the Proteas and Rajasthan Royals batter opened up on lost contracts, injury heartbreak and the mindset that sparked his breakthrough in India.
Ferreira spent his first three IPL seasons on the bench before finally getting his chance in 2026.
“For me, it was just important to make my opportunity in the IPL count. I’ve been here for four years now. In the previous three years, I spent a lot of time carrying drinks and serving the other guys in the team,” he said.
“I just really didn’t want to do that again. When this opportunity comes, you need to take it with both hands because these opportunities are rare.”

He has done exactly that. Ferreira has scored 229 runs in nine matches at an average of 45.80 and a strike rate of 177.52, with innings of 52 off 26 against Punjab Kings and 47 off 14 balls against Delhi Capitals among his standout contributions.
Behind the performances lies a story of genuine adversity. Ferreira lost his contract at Easterns Cricket early in his career, forcing him to take a 9-to-5 job before the Titans gave him a second chance.
“Losing my contract was quite harsh. Getting that email saying your contract’s been terminated was a bit of a slap in the face. But I had to crack on and not dwell on it for too long.”
When a collarbone injury ruled him out of the T20 World Cup squad, Ferreira leaned on that same perspective.

“When I got injured, I said to myself, nothing can be worse than losing your contract. At least my collarbone can heal, and I can play cricket again.”
“It was out of my control. All I could focus on then was doing the rehab, getting back as fast as I could, and getting ready for IPL.”
“It’s important to keep working hard, keep striving for better things and keep fuelling myself to win more games for the team. That’s ultimately what my job is.”
