Sooryavanshi earns India call-up, Suryakumar axed

India named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in their T20 squad on Saturday, handing the 15-year-old his maiden international call-up after a record-breaking IPL 2026 campaign.

The teenager scored 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.31 to claim the Orange Cap as the youngest winner in the competition’s history.

Selectors also removed Suryakumar Yadav as captain, replacing him with Shreyas Iyer for two T20 internationals in Ireland, five matches in England and the Asian Games in Japan.

Suryakumar, who led India to the T20 World Cup title in March, is understood to have been dropped from the squad altogether following a difficult 18 months with the bat, during which he managed just 270 runs in 13 IPL innings and scored at a strike rate of 136.72 at the World Cup.

Iyer, who captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, scored 498 runs in this season’s IPL at a strike rate of 168.81. Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain.
