The South African seamer achieved the milestone against Essex, becoming just the 20th player in Hampshire history to take 500 first-class wickets for the club.
Abbott’s landmark scalp came when he dismissed Charlie Allison – more than 12 years after taking his first Hampshire wicket, that of Michael Klinger on 13 April 2014.
Hampshire Cricket hailed Abbott’s achievement on social media, describing him as “one of the best to ever do it”.

The achievement underlines Abbott’s remarkable consistency since joining the county and places him among the most prolific overseas bowlers in modern English domestic cricket.
Abbott is the first bowler to reach the 500-wicket mark for Hampshire in the modern two-division County Championship era introduced after 2000.
His 500 scalps have come at a remarkable average of 19.99 and an economy rate of 2.89.
The 38-year-old has been a dominant force for Hampshire across the past decade, regularly finishing among Division One’s leading wicket-takers. He claimed 55 wickets in 2024 and followed that with 56 in 2025.
Abbott’s extraordinary 17-86 match figures against Somerset in 2019 remain the best County Championship match return since 1956 and the fourth-best in the competition’s history.
While Hampshire legends from a bygone era such as Derek Shackleton, Alex Kennedy and Jack Newman remain far ahead on the all-time list, Abbott has firmly established himself among the county’s modern-day icons.
The former Proteas quick has now taken more than 700 first-class wickets in his professional career and continues to be regarded as one of the finest overseas fast bowlers to feature in county cricket during the professional era.
