• Abbott continues to impress on County circuit

Hampshire’s Kyle Abbott’s 6-47 against Leicestershire is still the best performance by a South African in this round of the County Championship.

In a match heavily affected by rain, Abbott’s efforts were in vain as the match ended in a draw. He did get another wicket in the second innings to make it seven in the match for him.

Hashim Amla made 24 for Surrey in the first innings of their match against Middlesex and will have to score quickly in the second innings if there is to be a result in the match.

Simon Harmer went wicketless in the first innings as the seamers did the damage, but he did score an important 40* on Saturday for Essex to help them to a 51-run first-innings lead. Earlier in the match, Proteas opener Pieter Malan could muster only seven runs batting at four for Warwickshire.

Leus du Plooy was caught behind for a duck for Derbyshire while David Bedingham is in next for Durham, they trail by over 238 runs in the first innings heading into the final day.

The match between Northamptonshire and Lancashire has still not progressed because of the weather. South African Gareth Berg got the only wicket of the day on Saturday, while Wayne Parnell did not get a chance to bowl because of the lack of play.
