• Saffas Abroad: Herculean Harmer strikes again

    A half-century and nine wickets against Hampshire make Essex spinner Simon Harmer the pick of South Africans playing in England’s County Championship.

    County Championship Division One

    Simon Harmer was the standout player for Essex in their three-wicket loss to Hampshire. Harmer scored a first-innings 62 off 90 deliveries (seven fours, one six) and followed it up with figures of 6-149 in Hampshire’s first innings.

    Kyle Abbott was among the wickets for Hampshire, claiming figures of 4-63 during Essex’s final innings, before Harmer added another three wickers for 102 runs to his match tally during Hampshire’s second innings.

    The match between Lancashire and Nottinghamshire only got under way on the third day following inclement weather, with Lancashire captain Keaton Jennings scoring 42 off 63 balls (seven fours) during their first innings before the match finished in a draw.

    Stephen Eskinazi scored 58 off 93 deliveries (seven fours) for Middlesex in their first innings against Nottinghamshire, whose Matthew Montgomery scored 52 off 56 balls (nine fours) during their first innings.


    Montgomery then followed it up with an unbeaten 34 off 65 deliveries (two fours) to lead Nottinghamshire to a two-wicket victory.

    In Lancashire’s draw with Kent, Jennings scored 74 off 152 balls (eight fours) during his side’s second innings.

    County Championship Division Two

    Colin Ingram scored 82 off 97 deliveries (15 fours) in Glamorgan’s first innings against Derbyshire, before the match finished in a draw with Leus du Plooy still at the crease for Derbyshire on 38 off 30 balls (two fours).

    Gloucestershire captain Graeme van Buuren scored an unbeaten second-innings 67 off 74 deliveries (11 fours) in a mammoth 339-run loss to Sussex.


    Caribbean Premier League

    In the second playoff qualifier between the Guyana Warriors and Jamaica Tallawahs, captain Imran Tahir was the pick of the Guyana bowlers, claiming figures of 3-7 to go along with Dwaine Pretorius‘ 2-21, setting up a final with the Trinbago Knight Riders.


    Tahir was among the wickets again in the final, claiming figures of 2-8, but Pretorius was the chief destroyer this time round, taking 4-26 in a Man of the Match performance as Guyana were crowned 2023 CPL champions.
