Patel’s all-round heroics fire India to series lead

Axar Patel starred with bat and ball as India beat England by six wickets in the first ODI, moving 1-0 up in the series.

England were left to rue a dramatic collapse, slipping to 64-3 in six balls after Harry Brook won the toss, before recovering to 258 all out. Joe Root, dropped on seven, and Liam Dawson shared a seventh-wicket stand of 121 to rescue the innings from 107-6, with Root finishing unbeaten on 76 and Dawson making a maiden ODI fifty of 68.

Patel took 4-62 with the ball, while Jasprit Bumrah, back after being rested for the T20 series, chipped in with the wicket of Brook. He then followed up with an unbeaten 57 as India chased down the target.

Captain Shubman Gill made 80 before retiring hurt, and Washington Sundar’s unbeaten fifty helped India get home with 28 balls to spare.

The win was India’s first of a tour that had already brought T20 series defeats to both Ireland and England. The series continues at Cardiff on Thursday.
