• Paarl Rocks name Markram replacement

Cape Cobras wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne has been added to the Paarl Rocks squad for the 2019 edition of the Mzansi Super League.

Verreynne played for the Cape Town Blitz in 2018’s inaugural MSL, but was overlooked at the player draft earlier this year.

‘I was a bit disappointed. I had heard a few things building up to the draft that I was going to be bought, but it is what it is,’ Verreynne told Sport24 at the time.

‘There are five other teams as well, so it’s not as if [Cape Town Blitz head coach] Ashwell Prince had a responsibility to buy me.’

He has since been recruited by the Rocks as a replacement for batsman Aiden Markram, who has been sidelined by a wrist injury sustained during the Proteas’ recent Test series against India.

‘Kyle will add variety with his batting and can also serve as a backup wicketkeeper,’ said Paarl Rocks head coach Adrian Birrell.

The 22-year-old Verreynne recently struck consecutive centuries in the Cobras’ 4-Day Franchise Series draw with the Lions in Benoni.

‘My goal is to play for the Proteas. My goal is Test cricket and a World Cup, so those are the two things I am focused on. T20 cricket is nice and I enjoy it, but at the end of the day my focus is on the real cricket – 50 overs and red-ball cricket,’ he added.
