Mumbai Indians sign Proteas star

The Mumbai Indians have confirmed the signing of a South African for the remainder of the IPL.

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj will replace New Zealander Mitchell Santner who has been ruled out of IPL 2026 due to injury.

Santner injured his left shoulder in Mumbaiโ€™s previous match against the Chennai Super Kings on Thursday.

Maharaj will join fellow South Africans Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton and Corbin Bosch at the Mumbai Indians.

In a statement, Mumbai wished Santner a full recovery and said it looked forward to seeing him back in action soon.

Maharaj is one of South Africaโ€™s most experienced spinners across all formats.

The left-arm bowler with sharp control and the ability to build sustained pressure has been a consistent presence in the Proteas setup since his international debut in 2016.

He was selected for South Africaโ€™s 2021 T20 World Cup squad without having played a single T20I, debuted as captain against Sri Lanka, and took a wicket with his very first delivery in the format.

Keshav in his last 30 T20 matches, has taken 31 wickets with a best of 3 for 15.

โ€œMumbai Indians are delighted to welcome him to the Blue and Gold,โ€ the IPL franchise said.

โ€œHis hunger, his craft, and his experience make him exactly the kind of cricketer this team thrives on, added with his values, discipline and his ability to operate under pressure.โ€

Mumbai have experienced a difficult tournament, having won only two out of seven matches, to sit second-from-bottom on the 10-team log.
