• Lions name Player of the Year

Captain Temba Bavuma was named Player of the Year at the Central Gauteng Lions awards on Saturday.

Bavuma led the Lions to the 4-Day Franchise Series and CSA T20 Challenge titles earlier this year. He was recently appointed vice-captain of the Proteas Test XI and included in the T20I squad for the September and October tour of India.

‘This was about celebrating quality, talent and excellence,’ said Central Gauteng Lions chief executive officer Greg Fredericks.

‘I’d like to thank those on and off the field for a winning season and congratulate all the winners within the Lions family. May you continue to thrive and rewrite the record books.’

Proteas star Rassie van der Dussen was named Batsman of the Year, while spinner Bjorn Fortuin won the Bowler of the Year award. Fortuin, too, has been included in the Proteas T20I squad.

Head coach Enoch Nkwe, who was recently named interim team director of the Proteas, was given a presidential accolade.

Seamer Nandre Burger, despite moving to the Cape Cobras, was formally recognized for national representation in the academy squad. Wicketkeeper Tshepang Dithole and batsmen Kagiso Rapulana and Ryan Rickelton were afforded the same recognition.
