• Elgar rescues Titans

Dean Elgar scored 174 as the Titans held on to a draw against the Highveld Lions in Centurion, to edge closer to the Sunfoil Series title.

The Titans were asked to follow on after collapsing to 230 all out in response to the Lions’ 609, putting themselves in real danger of giving the Lions a way back into the tournament with one match left to play, but the draw gives the Titans a substantial lead over the Knights, meaning they can lose their last match against the Cobras and still have a very good chance of winning their first title since the 2011-12 season.

The side from Centurion started the day on 154-1 on the back of some staunch resistance from Elgar, and he battled on throughout the day despite others falling around him. They went from 186-1 to 216-5 thanks to Pumelela Matshikwe, who took all five wickets.

That didn’t deter the Proteas opener, who reached his 150 among a 110-run stand with the in-form Qaasim Adams. Matshikwe got his sixth to see off Elgar, but the hosts had enough in them to score 385-6 and hold on for a credible draw.

That was the only match remaining on Sunday, as the Warriors wrapped up their match against the Knights inside two days for their first win of the tournament, while Wayne Parnell took 12 wickets in the Cape Cobras’ nine-wicket victory over the Dolphins.
