Rabada searches for South Africa’s next pace star

Kagiso Rabada wants to use the opportunities he received in cricket to help uncover South Africa’s next generation of fast bowlers.

The Proteas spearhead discussed the vision behind the KG Rabada Fast Bowling Academy during a Rado event at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town.

Rabada said his journey had inspired him to create a platform where young bowlers could chase their own dreams and develop the skills required to succeed.

“I’ve been given an opportunity to chase my dream, so it’s about understanding what else is out there and giving everyone else a platform to achieve what they feel passionate about,” he said.

Rabada’s academy aims to identify raw pace while helping young players understand every aspect of fast bowling.

The 31-year-old believes South Africa still has an abundance of exciting talent waiting to be discovered.

“I’m very patriotic about South Africa and Cricket South Africa,” he said. “I’d like to see more fast-bowling talent expressing themselves, bowling fast and doing the best that they can.

“It’s something I’d like to see continue and it’s in my interest. Why not do it? It’s part of giving back and finding something new and exciting.”

Rabada believes pace bowling remains one of cricket’s greatest spectacles because of its ability to set the tone for an entire team.

“Fast bowling is awesome. It sets the tone,” he said. “It’s a spectacle. Let’s see what else is out there that’s exciting.”

While natural speed provides a valuable foundation, Rabada said the academy would also focus on attitude, enjoyment and developing a complete range of skills.

“It’s about teaching them all the skills they can get, making it fun and learning about fast bowling,” he said. “That’s the cool thing about it.”

Rabada has already created a lasting legacy through his performances for the Proteas. His academy offers him the chance to build another by opening the door for young quicks who may otherwise never receive an opportunity.

For South African cricket, the prospect of Rabada passing his experience on to the next generation can only be encouraging.
