ECB tightens alcohol rules

England's cricketers have been told to avoid alcohol around matches after the ECB introduced a stricter code of conduct.

This follows last month’s nightclub incident involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson.

According to The Telegraph, the revised policy was circulated to players between the first and second Tests against New Zealand after confusion over an existing midnight curfew.

Stokes and Atkinson missed the second Test following the incident at a London nightclub after England’s series-opening victory, although the pair later returned for the decider.

The updated policy reinforces the midnight curfew for every day of England home series and overseas tours and includes several new guidelines.

Players must:

  • Observe the midnight curfew throughout every England home series and tour.
  • Avoid appearing in public under the influence of alcohol.
  • Not post alcohol-related content on social media.
  • Inform team management or security if they are outside the team hotel after 10pm, including any changes to their plans.

The ECB has also introduced additional measures covering the period from the day before a match until the end of the day after it finishes.

During that time:

  • Players are advised not to consume alcohol.
  • Drinking alcohol in public, including public areas of the team hotel, is prohibited unless specifically approved by managing director Rob Key or head coach Brendon McCullum.
  • Players are strongly discouraged from drinking alcohol in private, with the ECB stating that “preparation, recovery and professionalism must take priority”.

The ECB confirmed to the Telegraph that if a Test runs for the full five days, the restrictions remain in place until the end of the following day.
