CSA admits mistakes in Newlands ticket saga

Cricket South Africa (CSA) CEO Pholetsi Moseki has admitted the governing body underestimated the demand for tickets to the Proteas’ New Year’s Test against England at Newlands.

According to Netwerk24, only around 1,600 general public tickets per day were initially available for the highly anticipated Test, which sold out in record time after going on sale earlier this week.

The backlash from supporters intensified after reports revealed that just 13% of tickets were made available to the general public, while 39% had been allocated to SA Cricket Travel, a travel agency partly owned by CSA.

Moseki defended the arrangement, explaining that only 12% of tickets were sold in overseas travel packages, with a further 27% allocated locally through package deals that include accommodation.

“We should have highlighted the number of tickets available. Our communication left a lot to be desired, but we are learning from it,” Moseki told Rapport.

CSA also allocated tickets to sponsors, unions, hospitality packages, media and other stakeholders, while additional tickets could still become available closer to the match depending on seating and pitch arrangements.

Despite the controversy, Moseki stressed that CSA never intended to alienate supporters and believes the partnership with SA Cricket Travel can help unlock additional revenue for South African cricket.

The Proteas will host England, Australia and Bangladesh during the 2026-27 home season, with CSA hoping supporters will show similar enthusiasm for the rest of the Test schedule.
