Newlands Test sold out in secret – SA fans pay the price

South African cricket fans hoping to watch the Proteas take on England at Newlands in January 2027 have been left empty-handed, with tickets selling out before the advertised start time - and Cricket South Africa yet to explain where they went.

CSA advertised the ticket sale for the 3 to 7 January Test in Cape Town as beginning at 9:30am on Monday 18 May. Days one through four were sold out before the sale was supposed to open.

By 9:45am, tickets were already appearing on resale platforms such as Viagogo. By early afternoon, single tickets were listed for over R4,000.

CSA’s only public response came at 11:45am, when a statement confirmed the ground was sold out and thanked fans for securing their seats.

When asked directly whether tickets had been pre-sold to English tour groups, CSA media manager Kirsty du Toit said only: “All tickets are currently sold out. I will share further information as soon as it becomes available.”

Sources cited by The Common Sense confirmed that tickets had been allocated to travelling England supporters and tour groups ahead of the public sale, leaving local fans with nothing.

Former South Africa Test cricketer Barry Richards was less diplomatic on social media: “England home game – CSA got the £s in.”

In December 2025, CSA launched SA Cricket Travel with Tourvest Destination Management, a venture designed to sell cricket travel packages to fans worldwide.
