Somerset sign Proteas batter

Somerset have strengthened their County Championship batting line-up with the signing of South African left-hander Jordan Hermann.

The 24-year-old arrives at Taunton with a first-class record that underlines his credentials in the longer format. Hermann has scored more than 3,000 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 45.22, with a highest score of 187 not out.

Those numbers place him among the most productive young red-ball batters in South African domestic cricket.

Hermann made his first-class debut for the Titans in the 2021-22 CSA 4-Day Series and was named CSA Newcomer of the Year in 2023. He has since established himself as a key figure for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20, where AB de Villiers identified him as one of the brightest batting talents to watch.

Hermann earned his first Proteas cap in a T20I against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in March 2026, a tour that carried extra significance for the Hermann family. Jordan and his older brother Rubin became the first brothers to represent the Proteas together since Albie and Morne Morkel.

Rubin, a left-handed wicketkeeper-batter who plays for Paarl Royals in the SA20, made his own T20I debut against Zimbabwe in July 2025, scoring a match-winning 45 on debut.

Jordan has since been named in the South Africa A squad to face England Lions in two four-day matches, making the Somerset stint a timely opportunity to sharpen his game in English conditions ahead of that assignment.

Somerset Director of Cricket Andy Hurry cited batting injuries as the catalyst for the signing, describing Hermann as a player with a growing reputation. At 24, with a first-class average above 45, a Proteas cap earned and a brother already established in white-ball cricket for South Africa, Jordan Hermann arrives at Taunton at the right moment in his career.
