Remembering Langeveldt’s miracle last over hat-trick

Charl Langeveldt delivered one of the most dramatic finishes in ODI history with a stunning last over hat-trick to seal victory against the West Indies in 2005.

South Africa posted 284-6 at Kensington Oval in Barbados in the third and final ODI, with the series level.

The proteas’ total was built on a superb 123 from Boeta Dippenaar and 87 from Jacques Kallis.

However, the hosts responded and a commanding 132 from master blaster Chris Gayle seemed to have put the Windies in control of the chase.

That was until the final over.

With four runs needed off six balls and three wickets in hand, the match was firmly in the West Indies’ grasp. Langeveldt, however, had other ideas.

After conceding singles off the first two deliveries, SA captain Graeme Smith was forced to bring the field in as the Windies needed just two more runs from four deliveries.

With his third delivery Langeveldt bowled Ian Bradshaw who went for glory with a wild swing.

Langeveldt then knocked over Daren Powell next ball to spark incredible scenes.

West Indies still needed two runs but only had one wicket left and the home crowd was suddenly a lot more quiet.

With tension at its peak, Langeveldt completed an extraordinary unassisted hat-trick by trapping Corey Collymore lbw with the very next delivery to spark delirious celebrations in the South African ranks.

West Indies were dismissed for 283, handing South Africa a remarkable one-run win and an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.

Langeveldt finished with career-best figures of 5 for 62, his astonishing final over etched in cricket folklore.
