• Giants batsman to lead Easterns

Nelson Mandela Bay Giants new recruit Grant Thomson will captain Easterns in this month’s Provincial T20 Cup.

Thomson was purchased by the Giants for R120,000 in round 11 of last week’s MSL player draft. The talented batsman was key to the Titans CSA T20 Challenge campaign earlier this year.

‘We have worked hard over the last couple of years to acquire guys who are going to make a massive impact in our squad. I’m happy where the boys are at and look forward to seeing what they can bring. It’s a last chance to put a hand up,’ the Benoni City Times quoted Thomson as saying.

‘Self-belief is something we may have lacked. We have always had very talented players who may not quite have reached their full potential. Once you get the first one out of the way, they tend to just keep coming.’

The Provincial T20 Cup used to be called the Africa T20 Cup. Gauteng are the reigning champions after beating Border in last year’s final.

Squad: Grant Thomson (c), Matthew Arnold (v-c), Sizwe Masondo, Wesley Marshall, Sabelo Sekhuku, Jurie Snyman, Yaseen Vali, Armand Erasmus, Imraan Manack, Ryan Cartwright, Aron Visser, Neo Felane, Khwezi Gumede, Dyllan Matthews.
