• Thunderstorm stops U13 Week play

There were no games completed on the opening day of the Momentum U13 Cricket Week on Monday, as a massive thunderstorm descended on Benoni and everyone was sent scurrying for cover, writes THEO GARRUN.

As a result, the second innings in all of the time cricket games were abandoned with very few overs bowled, and the teams batting second were deprived of a chance to show what they could do.

The batsmen had the upper hand in the innings that were completed, with one century and two fifties scored along with quite a few handy totals being posted.

The century was by KwaZulu-Natal Coastal’s Ivan Lockem, who hit 106 off 106 balls (18 fours) against Zimbabwe. He saw his side go to 206-8 – the highest score of the day – and Zimbabwe were on 22-4 when the game was called off.

Tristan van Schalkwyk of the hosts, Easterns, made 84 off 93 balls with 18 fours against Boland, who in reply faced just two overs when the heavens opened.

The other half-century was from David Simon of Western Province, who made 50 against SWD. SWD were on 37-3 when the game was called off.

The best bowling figures were from Kaiden Titus, who took 5-21 in six overs for Eastern Province against Northwest.
