• Rahul impresses Kohli at four

Captain Virat Kohli hailed batsman KL Rahul’s century as the ‘big positive’ during India’s 95-run victory over Bangladesh in Tuesday’s warm-up fixture victory over Bangladesh at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, Wales.

Rahul, accompanied by fellow centurion Mahendra Singh Dhoni, struck a dozen fours and a quartet of sixes en route to 108 from 99 deliveries. India amassed 359 for seven, after which Bangladesh slipped to 264 all out.

‘All the other people know their role pretty well, so it was important that KL gets runs, because he is such a sound player. He can get the scoreboard ticking, and you saw that – a great example of the skillset that he has,’ said Kohli.

The right-handed Rahul traditionally opens the batting in ODI and Test cricket, but arrived at the crease in fourth position on Tuesday after opening batsman Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan were dismissed early.

‘It is a team game and you need to be flexible and be ready to bat wherever, or as a player you need to be ready to take up whatever role is given to you. Every batsman who has played at this level knows how to handle pressure, and knows how to handle the roles and responsibilities given to him,’ said Rahul.

‘And it is a team game and everybody has been prepared for the last couple of years in a way where anything, any role can be given come a big game. All of us are prepared that way and nothing that is given to any individual now will come off as a surprise. Everybody has been tried and tested in different positions. As individuals, we have got a fair hit and know how to perform if a different role is given to us.’
