The South Africans need to ramp up preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia in October and this could have the side travel to Pakistan for a series of just three T20 internationals.
The Proteas last played in Pakistan in 2007 with away matches in the UAE following a terrorist attack on the bus carrying the Sri Lankan Test team in 2009.
A security team is expected to visit Pakistan in February, with its report back to CSA likely to determine the viability of a long-awaited return to the country.
The Proteas are next scheduled to play Pakistan in 2012 for two Test matches and three T20 internationals.
