• Proteas need early breakthrough

England will resume on 238-5 on day three of the Test at the Wanderers.

Thanks to the efforts of Joe Root and Ben Stokes, England are back in the contest. By the end of day two, England had reduced South Africa’s first innings lead to 75 runs. Root (106) and Jonny Bairstow (4) will look to make further progress on day three.

South Africa need to produce something special in the first session if they are to regain control of this Test and keep the four-game series alive. As it stands, England lead the series 1-0. The tourists are one win away from clinching the series. That outcome would see the Proteas surrendering their No 1 ranking in Test cricket.

Bad light stopped play late on day two. As a result, day three’s proceedings will start 30 minutes earlier at 10:00 in an effort to make up the lost time.
