• Philander: Seamers must make impact

The experienced Vernon Philander has heralded the importance of the Proteas’ seamers in conditions that will generally suit spinners during next month’s Test series against India.

The tourists have named a squad dotted with specialist spinners Dane Piedt, Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy for October’s three Tests in Visakhapatnam, Pune and Ranchi.

‘The pitches for the Tests will be spinner-friendly. There’s no doubt about that. Our spinners will have to step up,’ Philander, who is currently part of South Africa A’s tour of India, was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

‘Having said that, the seamers will be used in short bursts, so we will have to make an impact. Taking wickets with the new ball is important, as this will set up the game nicely for the spinners. It will be hard work for the pacers, but I’m looking forward to it.’

The 34-year-old Philander, who has only played one Test in India, is looking forward to partnering fast bowler Kagiso Rabada with the new ball. Rabada is currently placed second in the International Cricket Council’s rankings for Test bowlers. Australia’s Pat Cummins is in first position.

‘Rabada is a world-class bowler. He is a wonderful prospect for South Africa. Rabada and I will lead the attack. But my role will go a little further than being just the new-ball bowler. We will sit and work out plans for each batsman, as well as the conditions,’ he added.
