The Chargers had finished bottom of the table in 2008, but a year later a squad stacked with international quality went all the way under the leadership of Australian great Adam Gilchrist.

In the final, Gibbs anchored the innings with an unbeaten 53 off 48 balls on a surface that demanded patience and control. His knock came through a key passage where he had to negotiate disciplined spells from former Proteas teammate Jacques Kallis, adding an extra layer of familiarity to an already tense contest. Behind the stumps for RCB was Mark Boucher, while Roelof van der Merwe also featured in a side that carried strong South African representation.

While Gibbs held the innings together, Australian all rounder Andrew Symonds added a valuable 33 to push the Chargers to 143 for 6, a total that looked below par but proved just enough as he later played his part with the ball in a disciplined defensive effort.

The tournament being hosted in South Africa added another layer to the story. The IPL had been shifted out of India due to security concerns around the Indian general elections, with matches staged across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Centurion.

South African fingerprints were visible throughout the competition. Gibbs was one of the Chargers’ most reliable performers, JP Duminy impressed for Mumbai Indians, and AB de Villiers was beginning his IPL journey with Delhi Daredevils.

The final also featured future giants of the league, with a young Virat Kohli in the RCB lineup, while Rohit Sharma played a key role for the Chargers before going on to become one of the defining figures of IPL history.
