• No more head coach, just a team director

Interim director of cricket Corrie van Zyl has revealed Cricket South Africa has dissolved the head coach position.

Head coach Ottis Gibson’s tenure will end in September. His successor won’t be employed in the same capacity, as CSA introduces a team director.

‘We’re going to term it a team director, which is a combination of the old team manager and the head coach,’ van Zyl told Sport24.

‘The team director is in charge of the team itself and he will report to the director of cricket.

‘There are clear lines of accountability and responsibility. The key guy to drive team performance, team culture and team environment will be the team director, which is the old head coach.’

Assistant coach Malibongwe Maketa, fielding coach Justin Ontong, spin bowling coach Claude Henderson, batting coach Dale Benkenstein and convenor of selectors Linda Zondi have also not been retained.

An interim management team, selection panel and captain will be appointed for the upcoming tour of India. Meanwhile, CSA will advertise the positions of director of cricket, team director and convenor of selectors.

‘We have to go and advertise for the new director and the new roles and we’re not going to get that right before the India tour. Time is of the essence,’ added Van Zyl.

The Proteas will tour India for three T20Is and as many Tests from 15 September to 23 October 2019.
