• Moroe mum on Nkwe appointment

Cricket South Africa chief executive officer Thabang Moroe has deferred confirmation that Lions coach Enoch Nkwe will be the Proteas’ interim team director for September and October 2019’s tour of India.

CSA removed head coach Ottis Gibson late last week. Fielding coach Justin Ontong, batting coach Dale Benkenstein, assistant coach Malibongwe Maketa and spin bowling coach Claude Henderson, too, were not retained. Convener of selectors Linda Zondi’s tenure was not extended, either.

The positions of head coach and team manager have been dissolved. CSA has introduced a team director post, which will be filled later this year. For the three T20Is and as many Tests in India, though, the role needs an interim solution.

‘I can’t confirm that as I haven’t had a chance yet to sit down with acting director of cricket Corrie van Zyl,’ said Moroe.

‘That information is supposed to come to me either today or tomorrow. I can’t confirm that as yet.’

Nkwe is CSA’s reigning Coach of the Year. He coached the Jozi Stars to the inaugural Mzansi Super League title last year.

Batsman Faf du Plessis, meanwhile, has been retained as Test captain and fast bowler Dale Steyn has ended a prolific Test career. Steyn retired from the longest format of the international game, but will remain available for ODI and T20I selection.
