• Mendis released following cyclist’s death

Sri Lankan batsman Kusal Mendis has been released from prison following his arrest on Sunday for running over and killing a 64-year-old cyclist with his car in Panadura.

The incident occurred just outside Colombo with the local man passing away as he was being transported to a local hospital, having sustained a number of serious injuries.

No indication has yet been given if the 25-year-old Mendis was under the influence of alcohol when the accident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning.

He appeared in court on Monday but was subsequently released on bail, with local Sri Lankan reports claiming he could be asked to pay close to Rs1 million in compensation to the victim’s family.
