• Maharaj: Seamers set the tone

Spinner Keshav Maharaj commented on South Africa’s performance on day one of the second Test against England at Newlands.

Meanwhiel, all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo and others have been released from the Proteas Test squad to play in next week’s round of 4-Day Domestic Series fixtures.

Batsman Temba Bavuma, seamers Dane Paterson and Beuran Hendricks and wicketkeeper-batsman Rudi Second were named in the squad for the ongoing second Test in Cape Town, but not the final XI.

Bavuma and Hendricks will play for the Lions next week, while Paterson and Second will represent the Cape Cobras and Warriors, respectively.

Knights batsman Keegan Petersen, who was a late addition to the Test squad in the absence of the injured Aiden Markram, will remain with the Proteas. Markram has been sidelined by a finger injury sustained during last week’s first Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion, where the hosts took an early series lead on the back of a 107-run victory inside four days.

The Cobras will be without Pieter Malan, who welcomed a Test debut this week. The Lions’ Rassie van der Dussen and Dwaine Pretorius and Warriors fast bowler Anrich Nortje are also in the Test XI.

The Lions are currently at the top of 2019-20’s 4-Day Domestic Series standings, after three wins in five matches. The Warriors, Knights, Cobras, Titans and Dolphins are in second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth position, respectively.
