• Lions proud of CSA awards winners

The Central Gauteng Lions have congratulated all their franchise winners after last week’s Cricket South Africa awards.

Perhaps the most notable award went to Rassie van der Dussen as International Newcomer of the Year. He had an outstanding average of 73 and strike rate of 81 in ODIs and a strike rate of 133 in T20 Internationals in his debut season.

These figures included an average of 62 and a strike rate of 90 in his maiden appearance at the World Cup. He also bagged the inaugural Mzansi Super League award for Jozi Stars as Mzansi Super League Impact Player of the Year.

Another big winner in the professional awards category was Bjorn Fortuin of the Lions. He was named CSA T20 Challenge Player of the Year as well as Domestic Players’ Player of the Season. The Lions had further success with Enoch Nkwe being named Coach of the Season.

The franchise also congratulated Bethuel Buthelezi and Evan Flint, who shared the Groundsman of the Year accolade.

‘I am grateful for the recognition given to our players by CSA. We’ve had an outstanding season with many more players over and above those rewarded having performed for us with bat and ball,’ said CGL chief executive officer Greg Fredericks.

‘A warm congratulations to you all. May the new season bring as much joy to all of you as our last.’
