• Iyer smashes 147, shatters Indian records

India’s Shreyas Iyer smashed a superheated 147 runs during Mumbai’s domestic T20 encounter against Sikkim in Indore to power his team to victory and earn Thursday’s Play of the Day award, writes ANITHA MADIKIZELA.

The top-order batsman – who made his name on the IPL stage for the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) – pulled out all the shots in the book when he smashed his way to a quickfire 147 runs off just 55 deliveries to go top of India’s list of highest individual scores in T20 cricket.

The right-hander’s sensational innings included seven fours and an unbelievable 15 sixes that also incidentally took him to the top with the most sixes in a T20 innings by an Indian batsman. Mumbai’s No 3 blitzed the ball at a rate of over two-and-a-half runs per delivery, powering his team to a mammoth 258-4 in the first innings – the third-highest T20 team total in India.

He also recorded a swashbuckling 213-run partnership alongside Suryakumar Yadav (63 off 33 balls, 8×4, 2×6) to power the pair to the top of the partnership records for the third wicket in all forms of T20 cricket.

Iyer’s heroics helped lead Mumbai to a devastating 154-run victory over Sikkum to put them top of their group in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (India’s domestic T20 cricket competition) after the first round of fixtures.
