• Graeme Smith keeps record after Kohli duck

Former South African captain Graeme Smith has retained his record for the most runs scored away from home in a calendar year.

Captain Virat Kohli required 75 in India’s second innings during the ongoing third Test against Australia in Melbourne to surpass Smith, but fell for a duck.

Kohli managed 1138 this year, while Smith welcomed 1212 in 2008.

The left-handed Smith’s prolific year featured 107 and 154 not out against England in London and Birmingham respectively, and 108 versus Australia in Perth.

His top score outside of South Africa in 2008 was a patient 232 against Bangladesh in Chittagong. That superb double century was amassed during a record-breaking 415-run alliance alongside fellow opener Neil McKenzie.

The right-handed Kohli’s tally also featured two centuries against England in the United Kingdom. His top score of 153 came against the Proteas at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf holds the record for the most runs scored at home and away in a calendar year. The veteran right-hander amassed 1788 in 2006, which included one double century, eight centuries and three half-tons.

He neared a double ton on three other occasions in 2006, but fell for 191 and 192 against the West Indies in Multan and Lahore respectively. He also departed for 192 against England in Leeds.
