• Gibbs: Boucher and Prince unlucky

Former Proteas batsman Herschelle Gibbs has publicly questioned Cricket South Africa’s decision to appoint Lions head coach Enoch Nkwe as interim team director.

Nkwe’s appointment follows CSA’s decision to not renew head coach Ottis Gibson’s contract. The head coach and team manager positions have since been dissolved and a team director introduced.

Nkwe will occupy the interim post for South Africa’s September and October 2019 tour of India, which will comprise three T20Is and as many Tests.

The 36-year-old Nkwe coached the Lions to the 4-Day Franchise Series and CSA T20 Challenge titles earlier this year. He was also the head coach of the title-winning Jozi Stars during last year’s inaugural Mzansi Super League.

‘I see one good season gets you in as coach of the Proteas. Easy as that. Unlucky, Mark Boucher and Ashwell Prince,’ Gibbs wrote on Twitter. Boucher and Prince are head coach of the Titans and Cape Cobras, respectively.

Earlier this month, former England captain Kevin Pietersen implored CSA to replace Gibson with Boucher.

‘Cricket South Africa sack Gibson and his whole backroom staff. There is only one man who can turn their cricket around – Boucher,’ tweeted Pietersen.

Assistant coach Malibongwe Maketa, fielding coach Justin Ontong, spin bowling coach Claude Henderson, batting coach Dale Benkenstein and convenor of selectors Linda Zondi have also not been retained.
