Former SA U19 cricketer named in Bok team

South Africa has produced its fair share of talented dual sport athletes, but none have made the transition from junior cricket international to Springbok starter as quickly as Riley Norton.

The 20 year old lock has emerged as one of the brightest young prospects in South African rugby and has now been named in the Springbok squad, and will start at lock against the Barbarians this Saturday. Norton has already attracted attention from national coach Rassie Erasmus after captaining the Junior Springboks and establishing himself as a leader within South Africa’s age group structures.

Cricket fans may remember Norton from South Africa’s campaign at the 2024 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. The Stellenbosch product represented the country as a right arm medium fast bowler and left handed batter, showcasing enough talent to earn national colours while simultaneously starring on the rugby field.

His sporting achievements at school level were remarkable. Norton earned South African Schools honours in both cricket and rugby and was among the standout young athletes in the country before ultimately committing his future to rugby.

That decision has paid off. He captained the Junior Springboks to the World Rugby Under-20 Championship title in 2025 and has continued to lead the side during the 2026 season. His performances have impressed the Springbok coaching staff, earning him a starting berth for the senior national team against the Barbarians.

For cricket followers, Norton’s story is another reminder of the incredible sporting talent that exists in South Africa’s schools system. While his future now appears firmly tied to rugby, his journey from SA Under-19 cricketer to Springbok starter is a fascinating one.

It is also a story that will be familiar to readers of SA Rugby Magazine, which has closely tracked Norton’s development from Junior Bok captain to one of the country’s most exciting young rugby prospects. His start against the Barbarians will mark a significant milestone in the career of an athlete who once represented South Africa on the cricket field and is now stepping onto rugby’s biggest stage.
