CSA plans domestic shake-up

Cricket South Africa is reportedly set to introduce sweeping changes to the domestic structure from the 2026-27 season.

According to Clubcricket.co.za, this includes a revamped first-class competition and an expanded T20 tournament featuring 16 teams.

The Division One first-class competition will be split into two groups of four teams, with sides playing 10 matches each, an increase from the current seven-game schedule per team.

Teams in each pool will face one another home and away, while also playing four cross-pool fixtures.

The eight Division One teams are Western Province, Boland, Warriors, Dolphins, Titans, Lions, North West and Knights.

Division Two will consist of Tuskers, South Western Districts, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Border, Easterns and Northern Cape. Those sides will play 12 three-day matches home and away, doubling the number of fixtures from the current format.

The biggest change could come in T20 cricket, where all 15 domestic unions plus South Africa Emerging will compete in one combined competition.

The tournament will reportedly feature two groups of eight, with each pool containing four Division One and four Division Two teams.

Tuskers CEO Jason Sathiaseelan welcomed the move, telling Clubcricket.co.za: “There is no commercial value in division two and this T20 tournament change will give division two teams an opportunity to offer a competition of value to sponsors because matches will be televised.”

Limpopo coach Gurshwin Rabie added: “It gives the division two players a chance to showcase their skills against division one teams.”

CSA is also expected to restructure the Division Two one-day competition, with teams playing 12 home-and-away fixtures aligned with the first-class schedule.
