Gerald Coetzee took a hat-trick as the Proteas bowled out a Cricket Australia XI for 226 on day two of the four-day warm-up match in Brisbane.
The 22-year-old fast bowler wrapped up the hosts’ innings with the wickets of Jordan Buckingham (caught by Dean Elgar), Chris Tremain (caught by Simon Harmer) and Liam Hatcher (bowled).
Coetzee finished with figures of 3-36 in 7.3 overs and Lungi Ngidi 3-26 in nine overs after dismissing the hosts’ top three batsmen. Spinner Keshav Maharaj picked up two wickets.
Campbell Kellaway ended unbeaten on 105.
Earlier on Saturday, the Proteas were bowled out for 347 in their first innings. Kyle Verreynne added just four runs to his overnight tally before being caught for 80. Captain Dean Elgar top-scored with 109 on day one.
At stumps on day two, the Proteas were 9-0 in their second innings.
The match does not have first-class status, allowing all Proteas squad members to get game time. Temba Bavuma did not bat in South Africa’s first innings due to discomfort in his left elbow, but is expected to do so in the second innings.
The first Test between Australia and South Africa at the Gabba in Brisbane starts on 17 December.
