• ‘AB is the most sincere person’

Former Proteas coach Ray Jennings believes there’s more to be uncovered around the ‘rubbish story’ that AB de Villiers made himself available to the Proteas’ World Cup squad the day before the team announcement.

Earlier this month, news broke that De Villiers had made a last-ditch attempt to join the 15-man World Cup squad, a request unanimously turned down by captain Faf du Plessis, coach Ottis Gibson and Cricket South Africa.

More recently, Jennings told Netwerk24 that he was certain De Villiers was not the type of person who would have done something that wasn’t in the best interests of the team.

‘AB is the most sincere person, definitely not selfish as a player. I’d put my life on the line to say that it’s rubbish that he would wait until 24 hours before the team announcement to make himself available. It’s nonsense.

‘I’d expect something like this from an arrogant Kevin Pietersen or Graeme Smith, but definitely not AB. I just know him too well to believe he’ll do something like this. There is another story behind the scenes that need to be told.’
