• De Villiers eager to overcome batting ‘debacle’

Captain AB de Villiers has conceded that the Tshwane Spartans will need to go unbeaten for the remainder of the Mzansi Super League to secure a berth in the final.

The Spartans are currently in fifth position on the six-team log after four defeats in six matches.

They will play the Paarl Rocks at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday, followed by taxing fixtures against the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants, Jozi Stars and Durban Heat over the rest of the month.

Their inadequacies were particularly evident during late last week’s heavy defeat to the Cape Town Blitz.

‘We had opportunities throughout that game with the ball. With the bat it was a debacle, to say the least, and we haven’t hit our straps yet,’ said De Villiers.

‘I think we need to win four from four.’

Meanwhile, Titans batsman Andrea Agathangelou has been added to the Spartans’ squad.

Agathangelou has replaced fellow batsman Theunis de Bruyn, who has been sidelined by a back injury.

‘It was obviously something I wanted from the beginning. I didn’t get selected from the start, but the fact that I eventually got the call to play for the Spartans is an honour,’ said Agathangelou.

‘I do think I can add value to the side and hopefully at the end of the day help to get those wins.’

England batsman Eoin Morgan has also joined. He was recruited as their international marquee player earlier this year, but has been playing for the Kerala Knights in Sharjah’s T10 League.
