Madsen, Montgomery leave mark in Lancashire stalemate

Derbyshire's South African duo Wayne Madsen and Matthew Montgomery featured in a last-ball thriller against Lancashire in the Vitality Blast.

Montgomery struck 26 off 21 balls, including three fours, in Derbyshire’s innings of 150-9, batting at a healthy strike rate to help set a competitive target after Martin Andersson’s 49 anchored the innings.

With the ball, Montgomery returned figures of 2-29 from his four overs, removing both Lancashire captain Keaton Jennings, bowled for 23, and Shadab Khan for 4, as he played a leading role in restricting the hosts.

Wayne Madsen added 13 in the Derbyshire innings, striking one four before being trapped leg-before by Shadab Khan’s googly as the visitors slipped to 66-3.

Neither contribution proved decisive in the end, with Nick Potts yorking Matty Hurst off the final ball to seal the tie, but Montgomery’s all-round display stood out as a rare positive on a night that ultimately came down to the very last delivery.
