South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt says the Proteas Women are ready to go one step further at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England, with a recent series win against India providing the belief the squad needed heading into the tournament.
Speaking to the ICC, Wolvaardt reflected on a preparation period that has sharpened the team across multiple fronts.
“Winning that series gave the group a lot of confidence, but more importantly, it showed the ability and resilience within the squad,” she said. “Players stepped up at different times and that’s something you need at a World Cup.”
Wolvaardt acknowledged that reaching back-to-back T20 World Cup finals has fuelled rather than satisfied the team’s ambitions.
“It’s made us even hungrier to go one step further. Behind the scenes, there’s been a massive focus on trusting the process and improving in the small moments that can decide big games.”
The South African skipper pointed to the team’s togetherness as a key strength heading into England, citing the experience of players who have been through major tournaments before.
Suné Luus, Marizanne Kapp, Chloé Tryon, Ayabonga Khaka and Dané van Niekerk were all singled out for the calmness and leadership they bring to the group.
The return of Shabnim Ismail drew particular praise.
“Everyone knows the quality and experience she brings. She’s one of the best fast bowlers in the world and someone who can change a game very quickly. Beyond her skill, she also brings a level of gees to the group.”
Wolvaardt also welcomed the ICC’s decision to increase prize money for the tournament, describing it as an important statement about the growth of women’s cricket globally.
On returning to England for a World Cup for the first time since 2017, she noted how much both she and the team have evolved. Eight players from that 2017 squad remain in the current group — experience she believes will count when pressure moments arrive.
South Africa open their campaign against Australia at Old Trafford on 13 June.
