Klaasen stars as Sunrisers thump Punjab

Heinrich Klaasen was once again in the runs, scoring 69 to help Sunrisers Hyderabad move to the top of the IPL table with a solid 33 run win over Punjab Kings on Wednesday.

Klaasen combined well with Ishan Kishan in an important 88 run partnership, with Kishan adding 55, as Hyderabad posted a big total of 235 for 4 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

The innings was built on a fast start. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head went after the bowling early, adding 54 runs off just 21 balls. Abhishek smashed 35 off 13, while Head made 38, giving Hyderabad real momentum up front.

From there, Klaasen and Kishan kept things ticking over at a high tempo, making sure Punjab never got any real control back in the innings.

Punjab Kings put up a fight in the chase, but still fell short at 202 for 7 despite a brilliant unbeaten 107 from Australiaโ€™s Cooper Connolly. It was his first IPL hundred in his debut season, but it came in a losing cause.

Hyderabad now go top of the table on 14 points from 11 matches, overtaking Punjab. Punjab slip to second after a third straight defeat, although they still have a game in hand.

Punjab will also look back on a few missed opportunities in the field. Connolly was dropped on 9 by Ishan Kishan, Kishan was put down on 18 by Lockie Ferguson, and Shashank Singh dropped Klaasen on 9. Prabhsimran Singh also missed a stumping chance off Yuzvendra Chahal.

Those chances proved costly, with Klaasen and Kishan both going past fifty. Klaasen finished the innings strongly before falling on the final ball.

Punjabโ€™s chase never really got going. Pat Cummins struck early, removing Priyansh Arya for 1 in the first over, and Nitish Kumar Reddy followed up soon after to dismiss Prabhsimran.

Wickets kept falling at regular intervals, with Marcus Stoinis (28) and Suryansh Shedge (25) unable to build any real pressure on Hyderabad.
Connolly tried to keep things alive, adding 68 with Marco Jansen (19), but the target was always a step too far as Sunrisers closed out a comfortable win.
