Samson keeps Chennai IPL hopes alive

Sanju Samson’s unbeaten 87 helped Chennai Super Kings stay in the IPL playoff race with an eight-wicket win over Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Delhi chose to bat first but struggled to build momentum on a difficult surface, reaching 155-7 from their 20 overs. Chennai replied with 159-2 in 17.3 overs to complete the chase with 15 balls remaining.

The result moved Chennai to five wins from 10 matches, keeping them in the playoff hunt. Delhi suffered their sixth defeat of the campaign, leaving them with little room for error.

South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs gave Delhi some resistance with 38 from 31 balls, including one four and two sixes. His stand with impact substitute Sameer Rizvi helped the hosts recover after they had slipped to 69-5.

Rizvi finished unbeaten on 40 from 24 balls, but Delhi’s total never looked secure once Chennai settled in the chase.

Lungi Ngidi, returning to the Delhi side after missing the previous two matches with concussion, struck early by removing Chennai captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for six. Ngidi finished with 1-30 from his four overs.

AFRICA PICKS: Cricket tips and predictions

Chennai’s bowlers had already done the key work. Noor Ahmad took 2-33, while Akeal Hosein conceded just 19 runs from his four overs. Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet Singh and Jamie Overton also picked up a wicket each.

Samson then controlled the chase. He reached his half-century from 32 balls and finished unbeaten on 87 from 52 deliveries, hitting seven fours and six sixes.

Kartik Sharma supported him with 41 not out as the pair put on an unbroken 114-run stand.

Chennai still have work to do, but this was a result built on discipline with the ball and clarity from Samson in the chase.
