Gareth Roderick produced the standout South African performance on day one of round five of the County Championship, scoring an unbeaten 164 for Worcestershire against Northamptonshire.
Roderick held Worcestershire’s innings together as they recovered to post 306 all out at Northampton. Fellow South African Beyers Swanepoel added 17, while Northants closed on 40-0 at stumps, still 266 runs behind. Ricardo Vasconcelos was unbeaten on 22, while Calvin Harrison had earlier taken 2-59.

At Canterbury, Chris Benjamin made 56 for Kent against Derbyshire, helping the hosts reach 352. Keith Dudgeon contributed 13 before Derbyshire ended the day on 24-0, with Dudgeon returning 0-12 from his opening spell.
Leus du Plooy made four for Middlesex, who closed on 272-6 against Durham at Lord’s.
In Division One, Migael Pretorius took 1-21 for Somerset as Yorkshire were bowled out for 162 at Taunton. Somerset ended day one strongly on 201-3.
At Southampton, Kyle Abbott took 1-64 and Codi Yusuf finished with 0-59 for Hampshire, but Glamorgan dominated the day to close on 353-1.
