Maharaj’s momentous milestone

Keshav Maharaj’s caught-and-bowled dismissal of Mustafizur Rahman in the first Test against Bangladesh is our Play of the Day.

It wasn’t that particular wicket, per se, that was so great – he had better wickets in this match – but the fact that it was the left-arm spinner’s 50th Test wicket in only his 12th Test.

He is the fastest spinner to reach 50 since readmission. The Mustafizur wicket was his fourth in the Bangladesh second innings and his seventh of the match. His 7-117 is second only to his 8-87 against New Zealand in Wellington (when he took 6-40 in one innings). He also has a 6-63 (v England) and a 5-94 (v New Zealand) since making his debut in November 2016 against Australia.

In the Bangladesh second innings, he had Imrul Kayes caught behind on Sunday afternoon, and then on Monday morning snapped up two wickets with lbw decisions, one from a ball that turned, one that didn’t.

Those all combined to give the 27-year-old an average of 27.65 and an economy rate of 2.89 throughout his fledgling Test career.
