Legend of the week

A five-for to remember

On this day in 1993, Brett Schultz’s five-wicket haul inspired SA to their first win abroad since 1965. He’s our Legend of the Week, brought to you by Aquavita.

After a gloomy period of absence from the game, South Africa worked their way back onto the cricketing scene trying to make a statement with every match played. Left-arm fast bowler, Schultz, played a huge part in the match which redefined SA as a cricketing nation. His career-best 5-48 helped his side to their first win abroad since 1965, bundling out Sri Lanka for 168 runs before an innings and 208-run victory.

Multiple injuries and surgeries to his knees put an end to his short yet outstanding career. Well known for his aggressive bowling style, Schultz battled for accuracy, but when he managed to bowl a good line the batsman could not handle his pace, making him a successful wicket taker for SA.

Schultz played nine Test matches for SA, taking 37 wickets at an average of 20.24, which included a BBM of 9-106 – in that match against Sri Lanka.
