South Africa took West Indies closer than many expected in their first Test back after readmission.
On 18 April, 1992, the moment had finally come for South African cricket fans. Ten players made their debut in what was South Africa’s first Test since readmission, and after being thrashed 3-0 in the ODI series against West Indies, they weren’t fancied to make an impact in the one-off Test against a fierce bowling attack featuring Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh. SA pushed them all the way, and bar an astonishing collapse, after being 123-2 needing 201, should have won. This was largely thanks to a nine-hour epic from opener Andrew Hudson, who made 163 in the first innings. No South African would go on to make a century on debut until Jacques Rudolph, 11 years later.
